Women’s Rights Movement
Many people think of the Women’s Liberation, also known as the Women’s Right Movement, as the brassiere burning craze of the 1960’s and 70’s. However, not only were no bras ever burned, but the movement’s roots can be traced to the beginning of the 20th century. Whether marching for the right to vote or fighting for equal pay, women’s movements around the world have enabled women with opportunities and rights that are now protected by the federal government.
Women’s Suffrage
The history of feminism has been broken down into three periods or waves. The first wave took place during the end of the 19th century into the beginning of the 20th century. During this time, women’s groups and organization were primarily rallied around winning women’s suffrage. The movement saw success in 1919 with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote.
Women and Employment Law
The second wave of the women’s rights movement focused on the legal and cultural inequalities that existed for women. This period saw progressive legislation in:
- Reproductive rights
- Maternity leave
- Equal pay
- Sexual violence
- Sexual harassment
