What is overtime?

Overtime is time worked over the standard lawful amount. This usually involves an employee working more than 40 hours a week or more than 8 hours a day. For hours worked in excess of 40, the employee is usually eligible for time and a half compensation. Certain industries, such as contract workers, are considered exempt and therefore not protected by law.
