A: A hostile work environment occurs when an employee experiences harassment in the workplace and consequently dislikes or resists going to work because of the negative environment. Illegal harassment can be based on race, religion, sex, disability, age, or national origin. Additionally, some qualities, such as sexual orientation, political affiliation, and marital status can also be considered unlawful grounds for discrimination in some states.
