The NAACP

History

After the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Ill, a multiracial group of activists formed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The group would begin defending and prosecuting cases involving injustice towards black people based on their race in 1910. During World War II, the NAACP fought to ensure that there would be equal hiring opportunities in war time industries. The group played a dominant role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s as well as the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.

Purpose

The mission of the NAACP is to “ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.” Since its birth, the activist group has sought to

  • Remove all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic process
  • Seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights
  • Achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States

Today

The NAACP continues its fight against racial discrimination in education and the work place. It sponsors various projects in the areas of civic engagement, criminal justice, economic empowerment, education, health, international affairs, and training. In 2007, the group filed a Federal class action lawsuit against 14 of the country’s leading subprime mortgage lenders, alleging racial discrimination in their lending practices.
