Reverse Discrimination
Definition
Reverse discrimination can occur in hiring practices and college admissions. It refers to the exclusion of a member of a majority class not commonly discriminated against, to compensate for the traditional discrimination against a minority member. The most common example would be filling a position that was traditionally filled by white people solely with members of minority groups to the exclusion of white candidates who may have seniority or be better qualified.
The Constitution
These types of practices have been criticized for their violation of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution, as well as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The term reverse discrimination is met with a lot of controversy, as it is often meant to criticize affirmative action, the practice of recruiting, hiring, or promoting people of color and women as a means to diversify the workforce.
Your Rights
Every person in the United States, whether they are male or female, black or white, is protected from discrimination in education, the workplace, and in housing. Fighting against discrimination also means protecting the majority. If you feel you were turned down for a promotion or job offer because of your status as a member of a majority group, you have the right to challenge that rejection.
