Labor Unions

A labor union is an organization designed to represent workers in a particular field or industry. They are legally recognized as the workers’ representatives. These groups are most prominent in the public sector, particularly the teachers’ and police unions.

Labor unions everywhere are designed to utilize collective bargaining in an effort to obtain wages, benefits, and working conditions for members that are acceptable. They also represent members if the management of a plant or school district attempts to violate contract provisions.

In general, labor unions are currently much smaller than they were at their peak in the 1950s. Despite this, they are still very important politically, particularly to the Democratic Party. Private sector unions are regulated by the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. This Act created the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) which oversees the unions. Public sector unions are generally regulated by a combination of both federal and state laws.
