Discrimination Against White Co-workers
Many employees of varying backgrounds and beliefs often make the mistake of associating corporate America with white America. While making efforts to expand diversity, employers and coworkers can overlook the fact that white, heterosexual, Christian males are part of the mixture of people that is essential to a varied work environment. In a work or office setting, it is important to remember that it is inappropriate to make assumptions about any employee, whether they are a member of a minority group or the majority group.
WASP
The term W.A.S.P., standing for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, was coined in the past decade or so to describe individuals who are thought to comprise the majority of Americans and have inherent advantage in the corporate setting based on their race and social class. It is true that an overwhelming majority of company executives and higher-up are straight, white men. However, this does not exclude them from inappropriate and hurtful stereotyping in the workplace.
The “Carpet Bagger”
It is offensive to assume that any white person involved with an organization or company’s diversity efforts does so solely for their own monetary gain. Instead of focusing on the money involved in diversity efforts, take note of what white co-workers are doing to help promote diversity.
It is also incorrect to make the assumption that your white coworkers are making more money or “have all the money.” Yes, there is a greater percentage of Blacks and Latinos who live in poverty in the US. However, the majority of poor people are white. To promote diversity and understanding, it is every employee’s responsibility to be understanding of all coworkers, not just those labeled as minorities.
