Discrimination Today Against African-Americans

The United States has taken many measures to prevent all sorts of workplace discrimination. Both the federal government and states governments have enacted a wide range of laws to protect workers or potential workers from discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination is now considered so bad in the United States that even any appearance of discrimination is discouraged.

Yet despite the laws, the rhetoric, the ideals, discrimination still persists widely in the United States. The American Sociological Association has studied present-day discrimination in the United States against African-Americans and has identified various ways in which it still exists. The Association has found that discrimination against African-Americans has evolved.

In 20% of all of the job interviews they give, blacks face discrimination. Also, when employers recruit they do so mostly from schools with majority white, or at least non-black students. Furthermore, blacks are often passed up in favor of whites for promotion.

Additionally, because a number of employers do not prefer to recruit employees from job-training programs, and many blacks take part in job training programs, blacks often miss out on job opportunities.

Clearly, job discrimination against African-Americans is still very prevalent today, even though some people it is essentially non-existent.
